Dare to Be!

WTM Conference

In-Person event, April 15th 2023 @ServiceNow, Montreal

Women Techmakers Montreal

WTM

Women Techmakers is a program created by Google to celebrate International Women’s Day and to highlight the talent of women in technology. This program has been in over 200 global events and seen across 52 countries.

When we Dare to Be: we explore what it would mean to be audaciously bold, to walk through the world with courage and confidence. We are willing to try something new, to step outside of our comfort zone and to be unapologetically ourselves. We don’t let societal or cultural roles or norms dictate who we are or how big we can dream.

Dare to Deliver - combining a data-driven approach and motivational factors to get your team to succeed
By Zilia Lavastida Lopez Senior Engineering Manager at AlayaCare, Rebecca Reich Director of Engineering at AlayaCare

Delivery is always at the forefront of executives’ minds. How can we move faster? How can we deliver more? Zeroing in at the team level, engineering managers are then tasked with turning those questions into actions: how do we even measure how fast we are going? Once we have that baseline, how can we move the needle to increase the team’s output? There are several factors that can influence a team’s delivery. In this talk, we will explore velocity with a multi-dimensional approach: gathering data from developer tools, optimally organizing Agile ceremonies within a sprint, and providing shorter- and longer-term goals to the team as motivation. We also propose daring to have “difficult” conversations at the team and individual level, and harnessing customer feedback to close the loop with the team on the impact of their delivery. You’ll leave with concrete tools for measuring your team’s delivery, and inspiring them to give their best to achieve your company’s goals.

By Catherine Proulx Researcher, National Research Council (NRC)

What does it mean to create truly inclusive video games? Is it even feasible, especially for mainstream games? Can you make your games more inclusive without making any faux-pas, even if you’re not an expert? And most importantly, could inclusivity actually make your games better for everyone?

By Hatice Ozguven SRE Lead at Morgan Stanley, tea aficionado

Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is a rising field with many job postings and novel challenges needing diverse perspectives. Yet it is both very male-dominated and not taught at school, hence quite obscure to many. This talk is to change this: to introduce SRE and how to go for a career in it.

Machine learning, Data Science, AI in video games
By Mahzad KALANTARI Lead Machine Learning Specialist at Gearbox Studio Montréal

Video games generate a vast amount of data every day, from various sources. One source is telemetry, which records all the actions and events performed by players in the game, such as quests completed, enemies defeated, and game times. In-game store purchases, whether made with virtual currency or real money, also generate data. Additionally, a significant amount of data is collected on the backend side for online and mobile games, such as breakdowns, connection numbers, and service alerts. Information related to social networks and discussion forums discussing the game also contributes to this wealth of data, which has only recently begun to be exploited. As a result, data science and machine learning teams have been created within studios to harness this data. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of the various applications of machine learning and data science in video game data. We will also discuss advances in AI, including applications of reinforcement learning. We will conclude this presentation with the challenges and issues relating to the democratization of machine learning within game productions.
